My partner just canceled her trip where she'd have easily spent 4-5k in the US economy due to uncertainty in the border governance.
A lot of my friends are rethinking sending their children to US for college education while Trump is in power and are considering European schools. That's probably a few million dollars over next 2-3 years potentially lost from the US economy from just people i personally know. And no one is coming from China.
Which is funny, StoryGraph is a Ruby on Rails app, exposing an API is a doable thing, which leads me to believe it is not a priority or a purposeful design decision.
Yeah Hardcover seems to have a GraphQL API they use for their UI, which they expose. There’s not a lot of extra polish for third party devs — it feels like “this is the API we use, use it or not, things may break”. On the other hand, StoryGraph does server-side rendering and so it doesn’t have an API already. So adding one would be a decent amount of work
To be clear, Hardcover also does server-side rendering.
GR ditching their API was one of the primary motivations for Adam Fortuna (Hardcover's founder and Lead Dev) to even think about trying to create a competitor, so when he did create one, having an API available to others was a primary focus.
Note: Hardcover is also working towards open sourcing at some level, hopefully in 2025.
THIS. Whispering into a slack channel off hours isn’t a way to get on-call support help nor is dropping alerts in one. If it’s a critical issue I’m going to need a page of some kind. Either from something like PagerDuty or directly wired up SMS messaging.
Same. I would fall into the same trap. One more article, another tutorial, another chapter of a book… juuust to make sure I understood the concepts; and what actually helped? Just coding, getting it wrong, fixing it, getting it wrong, fixing it, etc.
THIS! The fact that of all the things we regulate in housing construction by codes, and how we’re turning to view the Internet as a fundamental access need, you’d think we’d be more prescriptive with “in order to make maintenance of this communication medium flexible and future proof, all communication cables in homes should be ran in conduit.”
What do you mean? I looked through both, and they are both very easy to set up. Especially if you ignore the build documentations for wallabag which suggest OS level install of PHP, and do it with containers instead.
So, if you want to try it out, both are identical. 1. Clone, 2. docker-compose up.
This right here… when the government can just run exit nodes and case after case comes out about the government capturing data from a tor node they operated, that problem needs solved first.
It would be a win if anyone who didn’t already think Lindel was a lying POS had their mind changed. Sadly shame and logic don’t really work on that crowd.
The problem is in that Cloudflare has already shown through previous actions in dropping 8chan and The Daily Stormer that they are willing to be arbitrators of what is acceptable. So once you're down that slippery slope not removing someone who looks a lot like those two sites translates to tacit approval.
The Daily Stormer claimed that Cloudflare were sympathizers, thereby forcing Cloudflare to terminate their business relationship.
We can make an analogy to defense lawyers. They will represent anyone: murderers, rapists, pop musicians, because they have a belief in that every person deserves representation. But if you start making claims that your defense lawyer is representing you because they agree with you, you’ll quickly be looking for a new lawyer.
