Probably because people are annoyed that "launching satellites" is portrayed as a major feat (as it once was), when nowadays launching a CubeSat is not that impressive.
We use QGIS in our research environments because it’s free, open source, and is cross-platform. It’s the only fully featured GIS suite that Mac/Linux users can use that I’m aware of. Always looking for suggestions though.

If you want something less turnkey and more flexible but more tasking, Django or Laravel is a good option.
Don't overcomplicate things, simplicity is often underrated on the web side of development. This is coming from a guy who writes low level embedded c and c++ on a daily basis.
