How do you balance a desire to do both technical and nontechnical work?

I am a product manager at a good company at the moment and love this job - I get to have a say in what we build, how we build it, and interact with customers.

On the other hand, I don't do any technical work these days and I miss using that part of my brain.

How do you bridge this gap? In a professional capacity I wouldn't want to be an engineer - I enjoy working horizontally and having my eye on the larger picture. As an engineer, you get to dive deep into technical problems, but are often working with schmucks like me to decide what to build.

On HN, I would imagine the answer would be to either start your own company, or work on technical projects in your spare time.

Is there a way to bridge this gap without committing your nights and weekends to side projects or becoming an engineer?

Are there roles where you get to do both?

Or, at this point should I just resign myself to the fact that I will no longer be in technical positions?
