I don't know about the "silently" part, but this is standard practice for most (all?) airlines.

It’s immoral and illegal in Europe but sure quite a few airlines still try this on.

I've never before heard that this is illegal in Europe and haven't found anymore info after some quick searching. Do you have anymore information about this?

They’ve been successfully sued under the consumer rights act 2015 (an EU law).
