Each vehicle had a driver onboard.[0] That being said, these are obviously not production family sedans. The winner traveled 25mph. But these are college students. It is fun to see what they can do. Maybe they will find their way onto a team at Mazda that pushes the CX-90 from 25mpg to 31mpg. That would be a big win. Maybe they land at Toyota and push the 4Runner from 17mpg to 20mpg. Or maybe they can work with other amazing engineers at Hyundai to take the Sonata from 52mpg up to 60mpg.
They are college students who just did a fun and exciting thing. Let them enjoy it and hopefully they will continue to dream big.
